Señorío de Bertiz from Sunbilla: what to see, trails and visit guide
Señorío de Bertiz Natural Park is one of the most complete excursions you can make from Sunbilla. It combines Atlantic woodland, a historic garden, heritage buildings, hiking trails and an interpretation centre within a protected area of 2,052 hectares between Malerreka and Baztan-Bidasoa.
It was declared a Natural Park in 1984, the first in Navarra. Visitors enter from Oronoz, although the park itself lies in Oieregi, in the Bertizarana valley. From El Eco de los Robles it works very well as either a half-day visit or a full day out.

The park protects important Atlantic woodland with beech, oak and alder and forms part of the Natura 2000 network. Official tourism information also highlights its wildlife, including deer, roe deer, wild boar and numerous bird species.

The Historic-Artistic Garden of Bertiz
The garden is one of the most distinctive areas of the estate. More than a century old, it contains species from different parts of the world, including sequoias, cedars, ginkgo trees, camellias, azaleas, hydrangeas, wisteria and bamboo.
The walk combines vegetation with ponds, bridges, pavilions, viewpoints and Modernist elements. Bertiz Palace and the Nature Interpretation Centre are located next to the garden.
Nature Interpretation Centre
The centre explains conservation work in the park through interactive resources, models, photographs and educational material. It is particularly useful for families with children and for visitors who want a better understanding of the ecosystem before walking the trails.
Official accessibility information also indicates that architectural barriers have been removed from the centre and that there is an accessible path of about 300 metres in the botanical garden. Surface conditions can vary with the weather.

Bertiz trails: which one should you choose?
The official network contains seven routes. The best choice depends mainly on the time available, your fitness and the weather. For a relaxed tourist visit, shorter paths close to the reception area let you experience the setting without turning the day into a sporting challenge.
Among the hiking options is Iturburua, a route of under 6.5 km with around 182 metres of ascent through plane trees, oaks and beech woodland, ending near the small waterfall known as El Suspiro.
At the more demanding end is the route towards Aizkolegi. Official information gives a return distance of around 22 km and about 680 metres of ascent, so it requires considerably more time and preparation.
How much time should you allow for Bertiz?
For the garden, interpretation centre and immediate surroundings, half a day can be enough. If you want to add a proper hiking route, allow a full day.
A good strategy during a longer stay is to visit Bertiz in the morning and keep the afternoon for relaxing in Sunbilla or exploring nearby villages in Malerreka and Baztan-Bidasoa.
Bertiz with children
The park is especially suitable for families because the visitor area includes a children's play area, a covered picnic space and access to easy routes. The interpretation centre adds an educational element so the visit is not simply a walk.
With younger children, prioritise the garden and shorter trails, especially after rain when the ground may be wet.
What to bring
Comfortable footwear with good grip, water and a waterproof layer are useful for much of the year. The Atlantic climate keeps the forest green but can also change trail conditions quickly.

El Eco de los Robles is a whole rural house in Sunbilla, with a standard capacity of six guests plus two additional places. Its location makes it easy to combine Bertiz with the Bidasoa Greenway, Malerreka and the Baztan Valley without changing accommodation.
