Xareta from Sunbilla: Urdax, Zugarramurdi and Sare in 1 or 2 days
Xareta is one of the best places to understand how the Navarra–French Basque border cuts across a shared cultural landscape. Urdax, Zugarramurdi, Sare and Ainhoa share architecture, mythology, language, historic routes and an Atlantic environment.
From Sunbilla it can be a selective one-day circuit, but a two-day version is much more relaxed and gives the caves, villages and La Rhune enough time.
Xareta in one day
• 09:30–11:30: Urdax and reserved Ikaburu Cave visit.
• 12:00–14:30: Zugarramurdi cave and Witch Museum.
• 15:30–18:30: Sare village and local food.
• Leave Ainhoa for day two if possible.
1. Urdax
Ikaburu Cave is a logical first stop because it works on timed guided visits and gives the day a fixed starting point.

2. Beyond the cave
Add San Salvador Monastery, the mill or a short village walk if the schedule allows.
3. Zugarramurdi
The experience is completely different: an open cave, a powerful historic narrative and a museum that helps separate documented events from later legend.

4. Sare
Across the border, Sare continues the same Basque cultural landscape with white-and-red houses, church, fronton and food.

5. Sare Caves or La Rhune
After two cave visits, consider saving Sare Caves or La Rhune for the second day to keep the itinerary varied.

Day 1: Urdax + Zugarramurdi
Build day one around Ikaburu's reserved time, then move to Zugarramurdi for the museum and open cave.
Day 2: Sare + Ainhoa + La Rhune
Start in Sare, continue to Ainhoa and choose between the train, a short walk or a slower village-and-food day.

6. Walk Sare to Ainhoa
The official route is about 12 km, roughly 2h45 and +232 m, classified easy.
7. With children
Two days are better for families: one major activity in the morning and one lighter stop in the afternoon.
8. Rainy weather
Urdax and the Witch Museum become especially useful in rain, while open caves and village walks depend more on conditions.
9. Food
Use the short distances to combine Navarra and French Basque food without building the whole itinerary around restaurant driving.
