What to see in Hendaye from Sunbilla: beach, Abbadia and one-day guide
Hendaye is one of the easiest international day trips from Sunbilla. In one day you can move from northern Navarra's Atlantic valleys to a wide ocean beach, walk beside the Deux Jumeaux rocks, explore Domaine d'Abbadia and visit one of the most unusual castles on the French Basque coast.
For a first visit, the best balance is beach, Abbadia and waterfront rather than trying to cover the entire town.

1. Hendaye beach
Hendaye's broad beach is the easiest introduction to the town. Its scale and promenade make it enjoyable even outside the swimming season.

2. The Deux Jumeaux
The two offshore rocks known as the Deux Jumeaux are among Hendaye's most recognisable natural features and help define the coastal landscape.

3. Domaine d'Abbadia
Domaine d'Abbadia combines Atlantic meadows, woodland and cliffs above the ocean. The tourist office presents it as one of Hendaye's major nature sites and a gateway to the protected Basque Corniche.

4. Abbadia Observatory Castle
The neo-Gothic castle was built between 1864 and 1884 for Antoine d'Abbadie and combines a residence with a scientific observatory. Its design is linked to Eugène Viollet-le-Duc.
In 2026 visitor numbers are limited and advance booking is required throughout the year, particularly in midsummer.
5. Basque Corniche and nature interpretation
The surrounding protected landscape includes cliffs, flysch, Atlantic heath and coastal viewpoints. Maison de la Corniche serves as a free interpretation centre and is especially useful for families.
6. Hendaye with children
Beach, promenade and short nature walks make Hendaye particularly easy for a family day. The Abbadia area offers a nature experience without requiring a demanding hike.
7. Cross to Hondarribia
Hendaye and Hondarribia face each other across Txingudi Bay, and passenger boats make the crossing simple when services are operating.
8. How long should you allow?
Half a day is enough for beach and promenade. A full day is better if you want Abbadia and the natural estate without rushing.
